What Is Prototyping?
Prototyping is basically an early sample, model, or release of a product that is built to test ideas, design assumptions, and processes.
When designing and developing a product, you may find yourself asking: “Should I prototype or should I simply move forward with my design?” We are here to give you 5 reasons why you should prototype.
5 Reasons Your Product Needs a Prototype:
1. Manufacturing Improvements
Prototyping is when you will learn a lot about the manufacturing process. You will get a better idea of the construction timeframe, the materials you’ll need to build it, and the costs of materials and manufacturing. If you take the time to prototype, you can make these discoveries on a smaller budget and improve the process for when you implement production on a larger scale.
2. Test Variations
Use the prototyping process as a time to fine tune your product. Perhaps variations 1, 2, and 3 were not perfect, but once you tweaked a few things, variation 4 was exactly what you’ve been looking for. It is much less expensive to test variations of a product when you are prototyping than it is when you’ve begun large scale manufacturing.
3. For Your Patent Attorney
Help your patent attorney truly understand your product by handing them a prototype to interact with. A patent attorney will draw up a much more in-depth and proper patent if they can fully understand the product.
4. For Your Investors
Investors want to see a company put in the effort to make a prototype. It will not only make current investors happy to see progress and excited for the product to come to market, but it will help entice potential investors when they can see and understand your ultimate goal.
5. Spark New Ideas
Prototyping really helps get the creative juices flowing and can help you come up with new ideas to make the product better, or sometimes it even gets you going on your next product. With a prototype in hand you can see how things work, and potentially start designing products that work together.
Ready to begin prototyping? Don’t worry, it really isn’t difficult!
How to Prototype Your Product
Jupiter Design makes prototyping your product easy with three simple steps: preparations for production, design and produce prototypes, and perfecting the design.
Preparations for Production
Jupiter Design helps you finalize your defined audience, what they’re looking for, and how the product will satisfy their needs. Once we have the vision, we create CAD and/or control art files that can be used to make a prototype
Design and Produce the Prototype
Jupiter Design takes your designs and brings them to life with a prototype. Depending on the size, function, and materials of the product, we will either create a prototype in house or work with a factory to produce one.
Perfecting the Design
We don’t stop once you have your prototype in hand! At Jupiter Design, we let you test your product, share it with your company, investors, and potential customers, and then come back with feedback to refine the design.
